Catching Up with Johanna

Johanna has launched a new project, Kleine Musik, which will have its debut concerts in the winter/spring of 2012. Kleine Musik is a an unusual program interweaving selections from the Kleine Geistliche Konzerte (Small Sacred Concertos) by  17th-century German composer Heinrich Schütz, with settings of the same texts by the contemporary British composer Ivan Moody, who is a convert to the Greek Orthodox Church. Schütz’s music is highly Italianate and florid, making a wonderful foil for Moody’s more dissonant, almost trance-like settings, which use some of Schütz’s gestures, but are also influenced by the eastern sound of Orthodox sacred music. The instrumentation includes two sopranos (Johanna and Karol Steadman) two recorders (Deborah Booth and Tricia van Oers), theorbo (Jason Priset), and viola da gamba (Patricia Ann Neely). Johanna is also performing with and coaching the ensemble In Lumine, the choir of the the Orthodox Christian Music Project, directed by composer Robert Sirico. Concerts will take place at various Orthodox churches in the spring of 2012. See OCMP's Facebook page.

Johanna is working with the wonderful Canadian tenor, Nils Brown, on a program of Scottish ballads from the16th- and 17th-century collection, The Scottish Musical Museum. They plan to perform the program in Montreal in 2012.
Besides maintaining her private voice studio. Johanna teaches for Musika  Studios. During 2008, she was on the music theory faculty of the Westchester Conservatory. In August 2009 she presented a masterclass in Baroque Performance Practice during the Summer Vocal Academy at the Westchester Conservatory of Music. In 2007 she presented a lecture/demonstration about medieval music to music and non-music majors at Long Island University (C.W. Post).
Among her other pursuits, she has been a consulting editor for the recently published NPR Listeners’ Guide to Classical Music; has sung for the score of a PBS documentary, and did a stint at WNYC-FM Public Radio as a classical music host.
